This is my webpage.
It serves as a central place for me to track my path through life and connect with people.
I was born and raised in south-central Alaska 7 miles east of a small town called Homer. I am un-speakably thankful for my loving family and the good-fortune of growing up in such a mind-bogglingly beautiful place. I graduated from Homer High in 1998 and took a year to travel and explore the world before starting school in the fall of 1999. Since that time I have been - as my brother endearingly calls me - "a schooley". I got my BS in physics from Oregon State University in 2003, but instead of facing real life I ran back to the university-womb and have been working on a PhD in Physical Oceanography ever since.
I love life and people. I believe that humans are crazy, beautiful, screwed-up, amazing creatures.
I feel that many people take life - and often themselves - far too seriously. I try to laugh at my own ridiculousness as often as possible.
I am completely baffled by the fact that there is simultaneously so much beauty and pain in the world.
I believe that all things are connected; that every action has a reaction; and that chaos prevents determinism. My understanding of science leads me to believe that these ideas are not inconsistent.
I believe our day to day interactions with people close to us are the most important moments in life. If I could do one thing in my life, it would be to be to spread as much love and joy as I've been fortunate enough to recieve.
As a scientist, I enjoy science as a challenge to find simplicity in complexity and I appreciate science for its commitment to exposing un-truth.
If you find this website pretentious or otherwise ridiculous I agree completely. In all honesty though the ridiculousness of this site is what amuses me most about it, and in my opinion being able to amuse oneself is a key ingredient to maintaining sanity.
